Junk My Car Inc, junk car buyers in Chicago

We buy junk cars in Munster

South of the Loop, just below the Borman Expressway

Does covering a broken-down car with a tarp keep it legal in Munster?

No. Munster's Sec. 12-41 counts a mechanically inoperable car on private property as abandoned once it has been visible from public property for more than 20 days, and a tarp doesn't hide it. Junk My Car Inc buys those cars across Munster, tows them free and pays at pickup.

A tarp doesn’t fool Munster’s code. Since May 2024, Sec. 12-41 has spelled out that a mechanically inoperable car sitting on private property counts as abandoned once it has been visible from public property for more than 20 days, and a car under a tarp or cloth cover still counts as visible. Three weeks goes by quickly. Junk My Car Inc buys cars like that all over town, and same-day pickup is often possible.

The 20-day test, and the shorter ones

The 20-day rule is the generous one. The same section lists tighter limits elsewhere: a car on public property becomes abandoned after 24 hours unmoved, one parked on someone else’s private property without consent after 48 hours, and a dismantled or inoperable car on public property right away.

Sec. 12-41 also defines a junk vehicle: anything not kept in an enclosed garage or building that either has no current plate, looks inoperable with extensive damage, or is dismantled or wrecked. For a car on a public street, Sec. 12-43 provides a written order to remove it within 3 days, followed by a tow and storage at the owner’s expense. Sec. 12-42 exempts sale lots, service businesses, zoned scrap yards, antique-plated cars and vehicles belonging to active-duty service members.

Snow, the business district and street sales

Munster empties its streets for snow. After 2 inches, Sec. 54-189 requires all vehicles off all town streets, except in the area bounded by Manor, Hohman, Ridge Road and the north town limits, where only the signed side has to be cleared. A ticket comes first, then a tow.

In the central business district, Sec. 54-183 limits parking between 2 and 5 a.m. to 30 minutes. Sec. 54-184 bars using a street to show a car for sale or to wash, grease or repair it outside an emergency, so the curb out front isn’t a sales lot or a workshop.

Indiana title rules, before we book

Indiana’s paperwork rule is the same for every car. The recycler needs the title, a BMV duplicate title or a BMV certificate of authority. A car with no title can be bought only if it’s at least 15 model years old and the seller holds the certificate of authority. A car younger than that with neither document can’t legally be bought at all, and the buyer would be committing a Level 6 felony. Tell us what papers you have, and we’ll say which route fits before scheduling anything.

Along Ridge Road and Calumet Avenue

Munster is a homeowner town: 87% of households own their home and three quarters of the housing is detached single-family (ACS 2020 to 2024). Most pickups are from driveways, plus some condo and apartment lots with the manager’s say-so. Town Hall, the police and fire headquarters and the post office all sit on Ridge Road, which follows the ancient Calumet Shoreline, and Calumet Avenue is the main north-south road, turning into US 41 just north of the Borman.

In September 2008 the Little Calumet River overflowed and a levee broke near Calumet Avenue and River Drive. If water is what finished your car, our storm-damage guide covers the insurance side.

The tow is free, and payment is made when the car is loaded, by cash, Zelle, Cash App or another app. Request an offer and we’ll call within 15 minutes. As junk car buyers in Munster we cover Hammond and Highland too, and over the state line we buy junk cars in Lansing and Calumet City. East along the Borman are Gary and Hobart. Munster questions

The car is parked on the street outside my Munster house. How long can it stay?

Not long. Sec. 12-41 treats a car left unmoved on public property for more than 24 hours as abandoned, and one that is dismantled or inoperable there counts straight away. Under Sec. 12-43 the town issues a written order to remove it within 3 days, then tows it at the owner's cost.

Snow is on the way. Where should a car that won't start be?

In the driveway. Sec. 54-189 requires every vehicle off every town street after 2 inches of snow. The one exception is the area bounded by Manor, Hohman, Ridge Road and the north town limits, where cars only have to clear the signed side. Violators get a ticket, then a tow.

Could I just park it at the curb with a sign in the window?

No. Sec. 54-184 bars parking on a street to display a vehicle for sale, or to wash, grease or repair it, apart from emergency repairs.

There's no title. Can Munster cars still be sold?

Sometimes. In Indiana we need the title, a BMV duplicate or a BMV certificate of authority, whatever the car's age, and the no-title route works only for cars at least 15 model years old with that certificate. Younger cars without either can't be bought; the buyer would face a Level 6 felony. We'll check your papers on the call.
