Calumet City started life in 1893 as West Hammond and only took its present name in 1923. The old name gives away the location: Hammond, Indiana, lies along the city’s east side, with Chicago and Burnham to the north and Lansing to the south. Junk My Car Inc buys junk cars throughout the city’s 60409 ZIP code, from the side streets off State Street to River Oaks Drive.
A breakdown gets 24 hours at the curb
Calumet City is strict about working on cars outside. Section 90-321 of the city code bars repairs on the public right-of-way, with one exception: an emergency repair finished within 24 hours of the breakdown. Hauling or driving a car out to the street to work on it is barred as well.
At home the rule is narrower than many people expect. On residential property you may repair only your own vehicle, and only when it carries valid state plates and a current city sticker for that address. Fixing a relative’s car in your driveway is off the table.
So when a car quits and the repair isn’t quick, the practical choices are a shop or a sale. We buy it in whatever state it’s in, with or without keys.
Snow routes, alleys and the city license
Section 90-304 turns the signed snow routes into no-parking zones once snow is 2 inches deep, with stops limited to three minutes. The routes include 155th Place, 156th, 157th, 163rd and 166th Streets, State Street, Pulaski Road and Yates, Crandon, Luella and Forsythe Avenues, and a car left there can be towed. Temporary no-parking signs for street cleaning or events go up at least 48 hours ahead under Section 90-305.
Alleys aren’t storage either. Section 90-303 says a parked car must leave 8 feet of roadway clear, and nothing may sit unattended in an alley for more than 10 minutes unless it’s being loaded. Parking on a parkway, curb, sidewalk or any unpaved patch of yard is out under Section 90-322.
Then there’s the city vehicle license, which Section 90-582 attaches to every vehicle registered to a Calumet City address or stored in the city. A car that hasn’t moved since spring still needs one.
Driveways, two-flats and apartment lots
Just over half of Calumet City’s homes are detached houses. Close to four in ten sit in buildings with two or more units, and nearly a quarter in buildings of five or more (ACS 2020 to 2024). That puts many of our pickups here in shared lots, which is fine with the manager’s go-ahead. Tell them a tow truck is on the way, then put the lot details in the quote form; we ring back within 15 minutes of a form request, and the offer we give doesn’t expire.
The driver pays you once the car is on the truck, in cash, by Zelle, by Cash App or through another payment app. Two or three cars at one address can leave in the same visit.
Sibley, Torrence and the neighbours
Sibley Boulevard is the city’s piece of 147th Street and carries Route 83, which bends south onto Torrence Avenue, where US 6 comes in from River Oaks Drive. The Bishop Ford Freeway (I-94) runs inside the city limits, and Torrence leads down to the Kingery. The nearest cross street is all the driver needs.
As junk car buyers in Calumet City, we cover the whole border. South on Torrence we also buy junk cars in Lansing, and over the state line to the southeast in Munster. West along Sibley is Dolton, and north of the city line we pick up in Chicago. If the title has gone missing, read which papers can stand in for it before you call. Every town we serve is listed on the areas page.
