Oak Lawn is one of the biggest suburbs on our map, with 58,362 residents at the 2020 Census, and most of it is houses. About seven homes in ten are single-unit buildings and more than eight in ten households own their place, so the usual pickup is a driveway or a garage. The other three in ten homes are in apartment and condo buildings, and we load from those lots once the manager knows a truck is coming. As junk car buyers in Oak Lawn, we plan around two questions: where the car sits, and whether it’s allowed to stay there.
Your own driveway has a clock too
Oak Lawn writes its abandoned-vehicle rule wider than most towns. Section 11-10-1 counts a car as abandoned if it’s in disrepair and can’t be driven, if it’s missing its current annual license or tag, or if it has sat for seven days or more and looks deserted. Section 11-10-2 then applies that to the owner’s own private property: a car with no current license that hasn’t moved in seven days is a nuisance there too, and after seven days the police chief can order it taken off private property.
The general nuisance list agrees. Section 8-1-3 names inoperable or abandoned cars, on public or private ground, that aren’t in a garage. So a dead car with lapsed plates on an open driveway is already a problem here. Garage it if there’s room. If there isn’t, Junk My Car Inc will collect it, tow it at no cost and pay you once it’s on the truck.
Overnight is mostly fine. Snow isn’t
Section 11-5-6 bans parking on streets and alleys from 1 to 7 a.m., but passenger cars and residents’ own non-commercial vehicles near home are exempt. What does bite is the plate rule in Section 11-5-15, covered in the questions below.
Snow tightens everything. With an inch or more on the ground, Section 11-5-5 switches to alternate sides: even-numbered sides stay clear on even days and odd sides on odd days, from 6 a.m. to 3 a.m. Posted snow routes, 95th Street from Pulaski to Harlem among them, must be empty after an inch until they’re cleared, and cars left there are towed at the owner’s expense. If the village declares a snow removal emergency, with snow falling an inch an hour and reaching four, every street clears for 24 hours or until plowing is done.
Finding you near 95th and Cicero
95th Street carries US 12 and 20 across the village as a four-lane road, and Cicero Avenue (Route 50) meets it inside Oak Lawn. Downtown runs along 95th from Tulley Avenue to 55th Court, rebuilt from 2002 around the Oak Lawn station on Metra’s SouthWest Service. Advocate Christ Medical Center is the landmark most drivers know. Give us the nearest cross street and we’ll find the block.
Papers, timing and the next towns over
Start a quote online and we’ll call back within 15 minutes; same-day pickup is often possible. If the title’s gone, list the papers you still have, such as a registration card, a bill of sale or an insurance card. Illinois rules decide which of those can back a scrap sale, and we’ll tell you on the call, before anything is booked. Our guide to selling without a title has more.
North of Oak Lawn we also buy junk cars in Burbank, and to the east in Evergreen Park. Hometown sits to the northeast off 87th Street, and toward Harlem Avenue to the southwest is Worth. Other suburbs are listed on the areas page.
