Hazel Crest was settled in 1870 as “South Harvey” and took its current name in 1900. Today it’s a village of subdivisions built mostly between the 1950s and 1980s, from Hazel Crest Proper to Pottawatomie Hills, Twin Creeks, the Highlands and Dynasty Lakes, plus condo complexes such as English Valley and Stonebridge. Junk My Car Inc’s Chicago-area junk car buyers pick up from all of them.
Not on the street, not on the driveway
The village’s own guidance is unusually direct: inoperable vehicles may not be left on village streets or in driveways. Owners face warnings, citations and towing, and in some cases arrest.
The code backs that up. Section 20-132, rewritten by an ordinance passed on March 10, 2026, lists abandoned vehicles on public or private property, and inoperable or dismantled vehicles, or ones with no current license, stored outdoors, as public nuisances. Section 20-107 separately treats an inoperable car stored outside a closed building as a nuisance where it harms neighbours’ use of their property.
So in Hazel Crest, a dead car in the driveway is not a “later” problem. Garage it, or sell it.
Before the village tows
Abandoned vehicles are towed only after prior notice, and the owner gets 7 days to ask in writing for a pre-tow hearing. If a notice is on your car, call us the same day. Our form takes the car’s details first and your contact details second, and we call back with an offer.
Snow rules depend on your neighbourhood
Hazel Crest doesn’t run one snow rule:
- Most of the village: no street parking after 2 inches of snow until removal is done. Hazel Crest Proper is the exception.
- Listed streets and subdivisions, including Chateaux Campagne, the Highlands, Pacesetter Knollcrest, Pottawatomie Hills, Stonebridge, Twin Creek Village and Village West: while snow falls, parking is limited to 3 minutes for passengers or 30 minutes for property, and once it passes 2 inches the limit holds until removal is done.
- East of I-294: odd and even sides, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., after 2 inches.
There’s no general overnight ban on cars, although trailers are barred from village streets overnight. On weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., parts of 168th Street, Charleston Street, the north side of 169th Street, Page Avenue and Paulina Avenue are resident and guest permit only.
Hazel Crest cross streets
175th Street and Kedzie Avenue meet at the centre of the village, and both are divided four-lane roads, as is 183rd Street. I-80 merges with the Tri-State inside Hazel Crest, and the Metra Electric line has a Hazel Crest station. Advocate South Suburban Hospital, at 17800 Kedzie, makes an easy reference point for directions.
Papers, and the towns around you
Hazel Crest’s border runs with Country Club Hills to the west and Harvey to the northeast, and we buy in both. For title questions, tell us what you have; Illinois decides which papers work, and our guide on selling a car with no title covers the details.
Southeast of the village we buy junk cars in Homewood, and directly south is Flossmoor. Northwest along 167th Street is Oak Forest. The areas page has the full list.
