Homer Glen’s code requires every vehicle to be operable and to carry a current state license and registration. That rule (Section 200-30), applied to residential districts R-1 through R-6A, is the reason a dead car in Homer Glen can’t simply wait out back. The village incorporated in 2001, in the area once called Goodings Grove, and about 95 percent of its homes are owner-occupied, nearly all of them detached houses. So the rule lands on homeowners, on their own driveways. Junk My Car Inc is the buyer that takes the car away instead.
Indoors or not at all
Section 200-30 says inoperable vehicles may not be stored or parked outdoors. The definition (Section 200-27) is seven days: if parts are removed, altered or damaged so the car can’t run under its own power for a week, it’s inoperable, unless it’s simply in for a temporary repair.
There’s no equivalent seven-day grace for a car without current registration on a public street, either. Section 200-16 bars parking on any public street without the state license and registration the vehicle needs.
More than one dead vehicle
If you have a car, a pickup truck and a van that all stopped running, there’s no need to book three visits. One pickup can take several vehicles. List them on the call and have the papers for each to hand, or tell us which ones are missing.
Winter rules
From October 1 to May 1, a snowfall of 2 inches or more clears every village street for the next 12 hours unless the street has been plowed. Fines climb for a second offence in the same season. Trailers, RVs and truck tractors are never allowed on public streets.
Reaching you
The I-355 tollway runs past the village, with ramps at Route 7 and 159th Street and at Archer Avenue and 143rd Street, both listed at the Lockport and Homer Glen line. Homer Glen doesn’t have its own police department; the Will County Sheriff’s Office covers the village. Lockport lies to the west and Mokena to the southeast. Pace buses run here, but there’s no rail station, so a landmark helps. Give us the subdivision name or the nearest main road along with the address.
Papers, and where next
Illinois decides which papers work for a scrap sale, so tell us what you have (title, registration, a bill of sale, an insurance card) and we’ll confirm on the call. Ask for an offer here.
North of the village is Lemont, where a dead car in public view has its own seven-day clock; see buying junk cars in Lemont. Orland Park borders the village on the east, and we buy junk cars in Orland Park too; beyond it is Tinley Park, and to the northeast is Palos Park. If you haven’t decided between scrapping and selling, our guide on getting rid of a junk car compares the two, and the full list of towns is on the areas page.
