Most people know Oak Brook for Oakbrook Center and the corporate offices along 22nd Street and the I-88 corridor, including the headquarters of Ace Hardware and Portillo’s. The village where people live looks quite different. About 80 percent of its homes are detached houses and 91 percent are owner-occupied (ACS 2020 to 2024), in subdivisions south of the commercial strip. A junk car here usually sits in a driveway or a garage, and that’s where Junk My Car Inc collects it, free of any towing charge.
Oak Brook’s code has more to say about that driveway than most owners expect.
Seven days, and the registration rule
Title 6, Chapter 4 of the village code covers abandoned vehicles. Section 6-4-1 counts a car as abandoned when it’s in such disrepair that it can’t be driven, or when it has sat unused for 7 or more days in a row and looks deserted. Section 6-4-3 says no abandoned vehicle may stay on any property for more than 7 days unless it’s inside an enclosed building or at a business that lawfully needs it.
Section 6-4-2 adds a second test that catches cars that still run. Leaving a car, truck, trailer or major parts on open premises is unlawful unless the vehicle has current registration from Illinois or another state. An old second car with expired plates on the side pad breaks that rule even if it starts. Under Section 6-4-4, police may remove and impound vehicles that appear to violate the chapter.
No street parking from 2 to 6 a.m.
Every village street is closed to parked cars from 2 to 6 a.m., every day (Section 7-1-1314). The code names police protection, street cleaning and leaf and snow removal as the reasons. A separate section bans parking on a street to display a vehicle for sale (7-1-1317), so the curb is no place for a car waiting on a buyer.
Zoning limits on what stays in the yard
The zoning code adds two rules that matter for a dead vehicle. A vehicle over 8,000 pounds gross weight, recreational vehicles aside, can’t be stored on a lot in a residence district unless it’s enclosed or serves the property (13-12-3(I)). And repair work in off-street parking areas is limited to emergencies (13-12-3(M)). A dead heavy-duty pickup over that weight can’t just be parked out back and forgotten.
About 12 percent of Oak Brook’s homes are in buildings with five or more units. For a condo or apartment lot, clear the pickup with the manager or association first, then tell us which entrance to use.
Tollways, Route 83 and Butterfield Road
The Tri-State and the Reagan Tollway meet inside the village, Route 83 has an interchange at 31st Street and Oak Brook Road, and Butterfield Road (Route 56) turns into 22nd Street here. Roosevelt Road (Route 38) reaches its I-290 ramps in Oak Brook too.
Title misplaced? Let us know which other papers you hold (a registration card, a bill of sale, an insurance card) and we’ll check them against Illinois rules for scrap sales while we’re on the phone, before anything is scheduled. Payment is made on the spot when the car is loaded. Get your offer, and see how a junk car sale works from first call to payment.
We buy junk cars in Oak Brook and next door in Hinsdale to the south and Westmont to the southwest. Across the Tri-State are Westchester and Western Springs. The areas page lists every other town.
