Hinsdale sits between the Tri-State on its east edge and Route 83 on its west. The downtown is a National Register historic district, and about 82 percent of homes are single-family houses. Whatever state your car is in, our junk car buying service for Chicago’s suburbs covers Hinsdale end to end.
Two street bans, not one
Plenty of suburbs have an overnight ban. Hinsdale has two separate street bans.
- 2 to 6 a.m., every day: no parking on any village street (Section 6-6-10).
- 7 to 9 a.m., weekdays: no parking on any village street, with an exemption for a resident parking their own vehicle on their own block, and only if it carries a valid Hinsdale vehicle license (Section 6-12-14).
Add the rule that police may tow anything left on a public street for 24 consecutive hours, and the curb is no place for a car that won’t start.
What Hinsdale calls inoperable
The village sets a longer fuse than most. A car only counts as an “inoperable motor vehicle” once parts have been removed or altered so it can’t run under its own power for at least three months, and cars kept inside a building are excluded. But once the village or the police chief sends written notice, the owner has to dispose of it.
That letter is usually the moment people call us. Get an offer online, and if you need a week to empty the trunk, the number still holds.
Abandoned is a wider test
Hinsdale defines an abandoned vehicle separately, and that definition reaches much further: a car left unmoved for 30 days or more, one whose plates expired 30 days ago, or one with no current registration (Section 6-14-1). Section 6-14-3 bars leaving a partially dismantled, wrecked or junked vehicle on any street, and treats an inoperable one on public or private property as a nuisance.
Two smaller rules catch people too. No vehicle may stand or be stored on public property, public lots included, for more than 24 hours straight (Section 6-6-15). And outside the AA and A residential districts, alley parking is only for active loading and unloading, with 10 feet left clear (Section 6-6-11). Putting a car on our flatbed fits that; leaving it in the alley overnight for us to find doesn’t.
Hinsdale cross streets
Ogden Avenue (US 34) runs east-west through the village, and the BNSF line has three Hinsdale stations: Highlands, Hinsdale and West Hinsdale. Downtown blocks and alleys have extra snow rules once signs go up, so a downtown pickup in winter may need a daytime slot. Elsewhere, every public street clears for 12 hours after a snowfall of 3 inches or more (Section 6-6-2), and street-cleaning signs go up 24 hours ahead (Section 6-6-3).
If the title has gone astray, tell us what you’re holding instead, whether that’s a registration card, a bill of sale or an insurance card. Illinois rules settle which of those a scrap sale can use, and we’ll have that answered on the phone before the truck is booked.
The steps of a sale are the same everywhere; our guide on how to sell a junk car walks through them. Across the Tri-State is Western Springs. The villages on Hinsdale’s other sides have their own pages now: we also buy junk cars in Westmont to the west, and in Willowbrook and Burr Ridge to the south. The rest are on the areas page.
