Can I keep a dead car in my Burr Ridge driveway while I decide what to do with it?

Not for long. Burr Ridge treats an inoperable car on your own lot as a nuisance unless it stays in an enclosed building. Junk My Car Inc buys junk and non-running cars across Burr Ridge, tows them free from the driveway or garage, and pays you when the car is loaded, in cash or by app.

Key facts

  • Burr Ridge had 11,192 residents in the 2020 census. US Census 2020 via Wikipedia
  • The village was once called Harvester, and it spans DuPage and Cook counties. Wikipedia
  • 94 percent of occupied homes in Burr Ridge are lived in by their owners. ACS 2020-2024
  • The I-55 north frontage road through Burr Ridge follows an original stretch of Route 66. Wikipedia

Most Burr Ridge pickups happen at a house. The village is 94 percent owner-occupied, and close to three-quarters of its homes are detached houses, with another 9 percent attached townhomes (ACS 2020 to 2024). About 15 percent of units are in buildings with five or more apartments or condos, and those pickups come from a shared lot. Either way, Junk My Car Inc, buyers of junk cars across Chicago’s suburbs, tows the car free and pays you on the spot.

What a Burr Ridge owner needs to know is that a driveway isn’t a safe place to park a dead car indefinitely.

The enclosed-building rule

Section 35-14-102 of the village code makes it unlawful to abandon a vehicle or its parts on a highway, or on private or public property in public view. It then goes a step further than many suburbs: an abandoned or inoperable car on the owner’s own property is a nuisance unless it’s kept in an enclosed building the whole time, apart from while real repairs are under way. Repair shops and dealers are exempt.

A car that’s been sitting on the driveway since its transmission went is, on paper, a code problem.

How the notice works

Section 35-14-105 sets the timing. An abandoned or inoperable vehicle can be towed 7 days after notice, or 21 days after notice when it’s on the owner’s own property in a residential area. You can request a pre-tow hearing within 7 days. Violations of these sections are handled by citation through the village’s adjudication process.

The code also has a separate term, “junk vehicle,” for a car that has been taken apart or crushed so far that it can never run again. If yours is close to that, there’s no reason to wait for paper from the village.

Street parking, 48 hours and snow

No one parks on a Burr Ridge street from 2 to 6 a.m. (§ 35-11-1313), and no vehicle may be left on a street, alley or public way for more than 48 hours straight (§ 35-14-108). When 2 inches of snow falls within 24 hours, a snow emergency starts on its own and street parking stops for 48 hours or until the plows finish (§ 12.25). So the curb isn’t a holding spot for a car waiting to be sold.

I-55, Route 83 and the old Route 66

The Stevenson carries most traffic in and out, with an interchange at County Line Road (exit 276) and another at Route 83 (exit 274) on the Willowbrook side. Joliet Road is signed Historic Route 66, and the I-55 north frontage road follows the original alignment. Plainfield Road and 55th Street are the other main roads, and the Pace Park-n-Ride sends buses down I-55 to Chicago.

When a title has gone missing, start by telling us what’s in the glovebox or the file drawer: registration, bill of sale, insurance card. Illinois decides which of those can back a scrap sale, and we confirm it during the call, ahead of the tow. As junk car buyers in Burr Ridge, we hand over the money in your driveway as the car is loaded. Ask for an offer online, and if you’re still weighing repair against selling, our guide to whether to sell, scrap or keep a junk car lays out the options.

Next door, we also buy junk cars in Willowbrook to the west and Hinsdale to the north. Willow Springs wraps around the south and east edge, and past it is Justice. See every town we serve for the rest.

Burr Ridge questions

What does a 21-day notice from Burr Ridge mean for my car?

Under § 35-14-105, an abandoned or inoperable car can be towed 7 days after notice, but when it sits on the owner's own property in a residential area the wait is 21 days. You can ask for a pre-tow hearing within 7 days of the notice. Selling the car inside that window settles the matter.

Can a broken-down car wait at the curb in front of my house?

Not overnight, and not for long in the daytime either. Village streets are closed to parking from 2 to 6 a.m. every day (§ 35-11-1313), and no vehicle may stay on a street, alley or public way for more than 48 hours in a row (§ 35-14-108). Leave it in the driveway or garage until the truck comes.

It snowed overnight. Will that hold up the pickup?

Once 2 inches falls within 24 hours, Burr Ridge is in a snow emergency automatically, and street parking stops for 48 hours or until plowing is done (§ 12.25). Driveway pickups usually still go ahead; sometimes we wait for the plows first.

I'm in a condo building in Burr Ridge. Can you collect from our lot?

Yes, with the association's or manager's OK. Give us the building entrance and roughly where the car is parked, and say if it has a flat tire or no keys.
