Old Route 66 ran along Willowbrook’s south edge. Dell Rhea’s Chicken Basket opened on it in 1946 and still sits near the Route 83 interchange on I-55. The road is still a good way to describe a pickup spot: the two-way frontage road north of I-55 follows the original alignment. Shops and offices have followed Route 83 and I-55 since the 1980s.
Close to six in ten Willowbrook homes are in multi-unit buildings, and 42 percent are in buildings with five or more units (ACS 2020 to 2024). So a pickup here is often from an apartment or condo lot, a townhome garage or a single-family driveway. Junk My Car Inc’s suburban junk car buyers handle all of them.
Ten days in view
Section 5-3-15(C) of the village code says no partially dismantled, wrecked, junked, discarded or non-running vehicle may stay on any property for more than 10 days, unless it’s in an enclosed building or can’t readily be seen from public places or neighboring property. The same section lists abandoned, discarded or unused cars kept on premises among nuisances.
In a lot full of neighbors’ windows, “not readily visible” is hard to manage. Ten days is a short fuse, so sell before it runs out.
Streets: overnight, snow and 24 hours
From 2 to 6 a.m., no vehicle may park on any village street (Section 8-8-10), and permission from the police chief is capped at 3 nights a calendar month. After a snowfall of an inch or more, streets are off-limits for 12 hours (Section 8-8-2). Police may tow any car left in one spot on a public street for 24 consecutive hours (Section 8-8-5). Parking on a street mainly to display a car for sale, or to repair it outside an emergency, isn’t allowed either (Section 8-8-8).
On 79th Street from Clarendon Hills Road east to the 50 block, both sides are resident permit parking (Section 8-8-18). In an alley, leave 10 feet clear and keep driveways open (Section 8-8-11).
Lots, plates and the manager’s OK
Section 8-8-17 says a vehicle, or its major parts, can’t be left on any lot unless it’s registered for the current year; the section also names a village license. A dead car with expired plates in a complex lot runs straight into it.
For a shared lot, get the manager’s or association’s OK, then give us the building and entrance. Several cars in one complex can go on the same visit.
