In Dolton, fixing your own car in the driveway can be a code violation on its own. Section 75.002(B) calls car repairs in a residential area a nuisance when they happen outside a fully enclosed building. So the plan to rebuild a dead engine over a few weekends in front of the house doesn’t hold up here, and the car itself is on a clock. Junk My Car Inc buys it as it stands, and we buy junk cars in Dolton with or without keys.
Ten days, then Chapter 75 applies
Dolton’s Chapter 75 deals with what it calls abandoned vehicles and personal property. Under Section 75.001 that means the unsheltered storage of old, wrecked, stripped or junked cars that aren’t in safe operating condition and can’t run for 10 days or more, with or without plates. Section 75.002(A) declares such a car a nuisance once it has been on any street, or on any public or private property, for 10 days.
From there, Section 75.003 tells the owner or occupant to move it into an enclosed building or out of the village, and to dispose of it once written notice arrives. Under Section 75.004 the police may remove and impound it, and the cost of removal is billed to the owner. Selling it is the cheaper exit.
Posted streets, primary streets and cleaning days
On posted streets, Dolton allows no more than 30 minutes of parking between 2 and 7 a.m. (Section 74.002(B)(1)), and designated primary streets close to parking for those hours during snow removal. Street cleaning comes with signs posted 24 hours ahead, and a car left in the way breaks the rule. Alley parking must leave 10 feet clear and not block a driveway, and some blocks are residential permit areas. Trucks and tow trucks may stand on business or residential streets only as long as loading takes, which suits a quick pickup.
Sibley Boulevard, Halsted and the Bishop Ford
I-94, the Bishop Ford Freeway, runs along the east side of the village, and exit 71 at Sibley Boulevard (Route 83) is in Dolton. Sibley is 147th Street and carries on west through Harvey and Dixmoor. Halsted Street, Route 1, crosses the Little Calumet River twice, and the stretch between the two bridges runs through Riverdale and Dolton. The village has Pace buses but no rail station, so a street and cross street work best for directions.
Most Dolton pickups are from driveways and garages: about 81 percent of homes are single-unit houses and close to three in four are owner-occupied. Ask for an offer with the year, make and model, and we’ll call within 15 minutes. You’re paid when the car is loaded, by cash, Zelle or Cash App. If the title is gone, list what you can find: registration, bill of sale, insurance card. Illinois sets the rules on which of those can back a scrap sale, and we’ll go through it with you on the phone first. Curious where the car ends up? Read about the parts that get recycled.
As junk car buyers in Dolton and next door, we also take cars in Riverdale and Harvey on the west side, and further west in Dixmoor and Blue Island. The towns we cover are all listed on one page.
