Dixmoor is a small place, under 3,000 people at the last census, and its housing is mostly two kinds: single-family houses and mobile homes, in close to equal shares by the Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 estimate. About two in three households own their home. So the car you want gone may well be parked in a mobile home park, and that’s fine with us as long as the park’s management agrees. Junk My Car Inc comes to the car, covers the tow and pays before the truck pulls away.
Forty-eight hours, not a week
Many suburbs give an inoperable car seven days. Dixmoor’s code, in the compilation the village posts, is tighter. Section 18-164 bans abandoning a vehicle, Section 18-165 keeps wrecked or nonoperating vehicles off the streets, and Section 18-166 says none may stay on private property for more than 48 hours unless it’s inside an enclosed building.
The nuisance chapter adds its own layer. Section 13-12(8) makes it a nuisance to let an inoperable car remain on private or public property, and it counts a car that can’t legally be driven in the village, not only one that won’t start. Under Section 18-92.1, police may declare an inoperable car in public view a nuisance and remove it 7 days after a village notice, with a hearing offered. “Inoperable” there means parts removed or damaged for 7 days or more. Cars inside a building and cars at a wrecking or junk business are exempt.
Street parking in Dixmoor: 24 hours and the 2-inch rule
The curb is no fallback. Section 18-92(a) lets police tow any vehicle that has sat on a public street for 24 consecutive hours. After a snowfall of 2 inches or more, Section 18-91(n) clears the streets until the plows have been through, and a car in the plow’s way is moved at the owner’s expense. Parking on a sidewalk or parkway is banned outright (Section 18-91(l)). Between those rules and the 48-hour limit, a dead car in Dixmoor has almost nowhere legal to wait outdoors.
Sibley Boulevard, Dixie Highway and I-57
I-57 runs through the village. Sibley Boulevard, which is 147th Street and Route 83, crosses Dixmoor on its way between Harvey and Posen, and the nearby I-57 exit at Sibley is listed under Posen. Western Avenue ends here, at Dixie Highway and Sibley, and Dixie Highway itself forms the line with Posen. Wood Street, Ashland Avenue where it meets Thornton Road, and 141st and 142nd Streets are other names that help the driver. Pace routes 349 and 354 serve the village.
